Elgin City manager Allan Hale reflects on his team’s 2-0 defeat at Edinburgh City as missed chances prove costly in the capital

The football season is reaching a critical stage and push for the play-offs is intensifying.

Elgin City still have the top four position in League 2 that they’ve held all season despite a 2-0 loss to third-placed Edinburgh City on Saturday - watch Edinburgh’s youTube highlights below.

The Black and Whites have three games left in their 36-match schedule to stay in that top four, including back-to-back home clashes with leaders Peterhead and Stranraer in the next two weeks.

Manager Allan Hale reflected on missed opportunities at Edinburgh on Saturday and said if his team fails to make the play-offs, their lack of clinical edge at times will be a determining factor.

He spoke in an interview on the club’s website about three golden opportunities to score before the home side went in front through on-loan Hibs attacker Malik Zaid’s fine finish against the run of play.

Ryan Sargent spurned a chance when clean through on goal while Jack Murray had a header cleared off the line and a deflected Lewis Hyde cross led to the home keeper palming away from under his crossbar and a mad scramble where Hale was amazed his team didn’t find the net.

“I still can’t believe that we’ve not scored,” he said.

Innes Lawson sealed the Edinburgh victory in the second half with the visitors again passing up some good chances to get back in the match.

“If we don’t achieve our objective it’ll be down to not executing the moments,” Hale added.

Stirling Albion closed the gap on Elgin to just two points, putting the pressure on Hale’s men to secure the points needed to make them uncatchable.
