Forres Thistle give their new management team a winning start in north junior football’s Elginshire Cup and New Elgin win on penalties





A swift hat-trick and a penalty-saving keeper helped New Elgin to progress to the next round of the Elginshire Cup.

Aiden MacKay scored a superb treble inside the opening half hour of the Free Staters’ first round match at home to Nairn St Ninian.

The visitors staged a sensational comeback to draw level and force a penalty shoot-out after a 3-3 final result.

New Elgin keeper Cameron Bruce saved two Nairn kicks and Dean Stewart, Robert Forsyth and Ryan McPherson scored for the home side to earn a 3-1 shootout victory.

Burghead Thistle also went to penalties at home to Westdyke as neither team found the net in the 90 minutes, but the away side went through 3-1 in the shoot-out.

Forres Thistle handed new management team of Barrie Macdonald, Derek Theman, and Keith Simpson the perfect start as they ended a losing run of results with a 1-0 success over Longside, also in the Elginshire Cup.

Josh Stephenson got the only goal of the game in the first half.

Dufftown went out after a 3-1 loss at Longside and Deveronside were 4-0 winners at Cruden Bay.

Lossiemouth United took another step towards promotion from the north junior championship.

United earned a 0-0 draw at Banchory St Ternan and remain clear leaders.

Islavale lost 2-1 at Rothie Rovers in the Premier Division, Lucas Davidson getting the Vale goal.
