The Highlander also won this year’s World Seniors Championship and World Seniors Matchplay, and earned a £10,000 first prize with his third major success of 2024.

He told Online Darts that his ambition is to win his PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) tour card back so he can return to playing the world’s best players.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said after Saturday’s title win. “Just to get over the line was fantastic.”

Henderson defeated three Englishmen in Scott Mitchell, Matt Clark and Paul Hogan to reach the final against Thornton, where he was 4-2 and 4-3 down and staring defeat in the face.

He pulled it back to 5-5 and in the deciding set, which has to be won by two clear legs, turned into a marathon with Hendo eventually throwing a 100 checkout for a 5-3 success to lift the trophy.

The Huntly-based 51-year-old has now been crowned a world champion four times in his sport.

He won the World Cup of Darts with Peter Wright for Scotland in 2021.
