Moray Rugby Club triumph in Saltire Energy under-18 Caledonia Quaich final against Deeside to complete youth trophy treble for Morriston outfit

Moray Rugby Club completed a treble of youth title triumphs with victory in Sunday’s Saltire Energy U18 Caledonia Quaich final.

Last month, the Morriston club’s under-13 and under-14 sides both lifted the Culbean Cup in their age groups with thrilling victories in their final.

Last weekend it was the turn of the under-18s, who travelled to Countesswells in Aberdeen to take on their counterparts from Deeside in a battle for the silverware.

In blustery conditions, Moray won 41-12 in an excellent game of open rugby.

Seven tries allowed Moray to gain the upper hand and see off their opponents, and seven different players went over the line.

Fraser MacMillan, Beinn Hay, Finlay Bacon, Mark Newman, Angus Lunn, Layton Chalmers and Logan McKenzie all scored for the new champions, and McKenzie also converted three of the tries.

This was the culmination of a fantastic season for the Moray U18s. They were Regional Conference winners having finished the campaign undefeated, reached the semi-finals of the National Cup and were runners up in the Robert Gordons College U18 sevens.

Sunday’s final success was part of a big day for youth rugby in Scotland, with a total of 16 Saltire Energy Caledonia Cup finals for boys and girls held at the Robert Gordon College pitches.

This year’s event saw the Sevens format trialled for all girls’ matches – as opposed to the traditional 15-a-side.

Saltire Energy CEO Mike Loggie said he was hugely impressed with the quality of the rugby on show.

“We witnessed some really fantastic rugby and the quality of the game has moved on so much in the past few years – it’s amazing. Sport in schools is so important and Saltire Energy is proud to play a part in contributing to the future of rugby.”

It proved to be a successful weekend for Moray Rugby Club as they also staged a Micro/Mini Festival which attracted around 400 youngsters from under-6 to under-12 age groups.

Last Saturday’s first team fixture in national league division 4 was called off.

Greenock Wanderers were due to visit Morriston but their bus broke down at Perth and got no further, resulting in a call-off just hours before the game was scheduled to start.
