Banff Castle unauthorised metal detecting incident is focus of police appeal

Police are appealing for information following a report of unauthorised metal detecting in the grounds of Banff Castle.

Enquiries suggest the incident happened between 10.30am and 11am sometime between Monday, October 21 and Monday, October 28.

A man and a woman were seen in the area and ground was subsequently found to have been disturbed.

Police Constable Rastislav Zubaj said: “Metal detecting at a scheduled monument or protected place without consent is a criminal offence and can incur penalties of up to £50,000 and two years in prison.

“Our enquires are ongoing to trace those responsible and we are asking anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything to get in touch.

“We are also asking people to check any relevant private CCTV to see if it may have captured information that could help with our enquiries.”
