Thousands of homes were left without power for approximately half an hour as the strongest gusts hit the region just after 7pm (Monday).

However, a

spokeswoman for Scottish and Southern Energy said the disruption in the north was relatively short-lived, with all homes in the Highland District - which includes Moray - reconnected by Tuesday morning.

She said 10,000 homes are still without power in the worst-hit parts of Scotland, around the Central Belt, where winds of 100mph were reported.

"We have had faults all over Scotland," she said.

"We are used to these adverse weather conditions, and we invest in our network, but I think these were extraordinary circumstances.

"Some of the nationals (newspapers) were saying this morning that it was one of the worst storms of the century."

The spokeswoman said trees being blown on to power lines caused the majority of problems.

Here in Moray, a number of roads were partially blocked on Monday afternoon and evening because of fallen trees.
