Scottish Conservative leadership hopefuls in Elgin as Murdo Fraser, Russell Findlay and Meghan Gallacher appear at Spynie Hall
The Scottish Conservative leadership race visited the home of the party’s outgoing leader on Saturday.
Murdo Fraser, Russell Findlay and Meghan Gallacher were at Spynie Hall near Elgin on Saturday, September 1, at an event put on by, and for, party members in Moray.
More than 40 Tory Party members turned up to the event.
The leadership race was triggered by the resignation of former Moray MP Douglas Ross, who announced he was stepping back in the build-up to the General Election on July 4. Voting opens tomorrow (September 4) and the winning candidate will be announced on September 27.
Chairman of the Moray Conservative Association, Craig Stewart Toner, thanked the three candidates for attending the “relaxed” event.
He said: “While the formal hustings were in Inverness earlier in the day, we were aware the candidates would have to drive right through Moray in order to get to the Aberdeen event.
“With some of our members unable to attend the hustings, we asked if they would stop by so we could ensure Moray was not forgotten during the process and were delighted when they all accepted.”
Cllr Kathleen Robertson (Forres, Conservative) said: "It is essential to me that any future leader of the party understands the needs of rural areas.
“I was keen to ensure that local authority funding and the need to provide the best possible public services to the communities was firmly in their minds."
Highlands and Islands MSP Tim Eagle added: “It was great to have a wide range of members and supporters from different backgrounds there with questions on roads, schools and the local hospitals.
“Scottish Conservatives must ensure we truly represent the views of the local community during election campaigns."
