Scotland ‘outperforming’ rest of Britain with 2256 affordable and social homes built in Moray

Scotland is doing more to combat the housing crisis than the rest of Britain, says Moray’s MSP.

Richard Lochhead has welcomed the news that 2256 affordable and social homes have been built in the region since 2007.

The latest housing data also shows that almost 137,000 have been built across Scotland, with 97,099 socially rented homes completed. Proportionately, this is 40% more than in England and 70% more than in Wales.

Mr Lochhead, who states there will be a further investment of £768 million over the next year, said: “Everyone in Moray should have a warm, safe and affordable home, and under this SNP government we are working to ensure those who need it most have access to housing.”

Social homes are available for rent from either the council or housing associations. A total of 1983 of them have been built in Moray since the SNP came to power 18 years ago.

The same period has also seen the construction of 273 affordable homes. Available to either buy or rent from the private sector, they are less expensive than the regular market level.

Mr Lochhead claims these numbers demonstrate the progress being made by the SNP government.

He said: “These latest figures show a significant step forward in addressing the housing crisis.

“I am proud that Scotland continues to invest more per person to tackle homelessness and help people remain in their own homes.

“From building more homes to tackling the root causes of homelessness, we know how important housing is to creating a better, more prosperous Scotland.”
