Old Buckie High photo jogs fine memories

AN old school photo published online in the Northern Scot has jogged some memories for a former Buckie High School student.

The April 16 edition of A Stroll Through Buckie in Days Gone By section featured a class photo taken in 1963 at the school, although apart from that nothing else was known. However, ex-pat Doug Fowler, who now lives in Thornbury, near Bristol has managed to put names to faces in the photo of his old Class 2A schoolmates.

They are: Front (from left) – Isobel Innes, Janice Campbell, Helen Slater (deceased), Freda Morrison, Rosemary Burnett, Mary Munro, Anita Smith and Alison Slater. Second row (from left) – William Burnett, Anne Murray, Mary Laing, Margaret Cowie, Joan Farquhar, Margaret Glennie, Hazel Mackay and Bruce Young. Third row (from left) – Ian Stuart, George Herraghty, Murray Geddes, William Reid, Donald Lamont, David Niven (deceased). Back row (from left) – John Reid, John Johnston, Douglas Fowler, Bruce Mair and Ian Hamilton.

Mr Fowler said: "I have managed to contact almost everyone in the photograph during the past few years.

"Eight of us met in Buckie in December 2017 but the advent of the pandemic has stalled any thoughts of a further reunion."

Mr Fowler added that he has regular Zoom meetings with some of his former classmates and even managed to track down one ex-class member – Alison Slater – when he visited Berlin in 2017. He still has two people from the photo to make contact with, William Reid and Bruce Young.

Two of the class live overseas – Ian Stuart in New Zealand and Margaret Cowie in California, USA – while the others either live locally or are scattered across Scotland and England.
