A total of 88,287 people have used the tag 'NorthCoast500#' when posting their photos to this site.

This figure places the route firmly on top of the popularity chart.

Cheddar Gorge in Somerset is second with 59,980.

The data was collated by the motoring website www.click4reg.co.uk

A Click4refg spokesman said: "Road trips are an increasingly popular way of discovering and experiencing new countries.

"And how good your trip looks ‘on the gram’ is very important in an age where everything has to be captured."

The North Coast 500 route has proved phenomenally successful since its launch in 2015.

A marketing ploy which rebranded a long-established road system as Scotland's version of Route 66, it sparked a 26% increase in visitor numbers.

However, concerns have also been expressed that it has led to traffic problems during the summer months.

Starting at Inverness, the 516-mile route heads west to Applecross, north to Durness, east to John O'Groats and back south to Inverness again.
