Arlene Fraser murderer Nat Fraser misses Elgin funeral of his mother

Twice-convicted murderer Nat Fraser did not attend his mother’s funeral, it is understood, despite reports he would released from jail for the event.

Eyewitnesses said there was no sign of the 66-year-old - jailed for murdering his wife Arlene Fraser after a trial in 2003 and a retrial in 2012 - as family members commemorated his 93-year-old mother Ibby Fraser.

Arlene’s body has never been found - with Fraser having never revealed its location.

Fraser is currently a prisoner at privately-run HMP Addiewell in West Lothian and is not set to be released for at least five years.

Previously, the Sunday Mail reported that the murderer would be released for the day to attend the ceremony in Elgin on Wednesday.

However, The Scottish Sun later quoted “an insider” who said Fraser’s permission to attend had been “revoked at the last minute”.

A spokesperson for Sodexo, which runs the jail, refused to comment.

The initial report in the Sunday Mail stated that prisoner transport company GEOAmey would be transporting Fraser from HMP Addiewell to Elgin, accompanied by prison guards.

"We do not provide details regarding the secure escort of persons in custody," a spokesperson for the company said.

Fraser has not appeared in public since his Edinburgh High Court retrial in 2012.

In 2004 he was temporarily released from jail to attend the funeral of his father Nat, which also took place in Elgin.

A social media post from William Watson Funeral Directors confirmed the news of Ibby Fraser’s passing and listed funeral arrangements, but made no mention of her son.

“Peacefully, at her home, on Saturday March 22, 2025, Ibby, aged 93 years,” the notice read.

“Dearly beloved wife of the late Nat, much loved mam, mother-in-law, granny and great granny.

“Funeral ceremony to which all friends are respectfully invited at William Watson Funeral Directors, Blackfriars Road, Elgin, on Wednesday April 2, at 12noon, thereafter cremation private.

“Family flowers only please.”
