In early July 1977, Moray basked in Riviera-like sunshine as temperatures soared into the 80s°F. The Northern Scot reported at the time that holidaymakers in short sleeves packed beaches and picnic spots, making the most of a scorching public holiday on July 4th. Schools broke up to blazing sunshine and Lossiemouth claimed the title of Scotland’s hottest place, with temperatures hitting 83°F. Ice cream and lemonade flew off the shelves, while suntan lotions were in high demand. Elgin’s tourist office saw a steady stream of visitors, the whisky trail remained a firm favorite and parks were filled with family picnics. The boating pond at Cooper Park thrived but by Friday, a slight cooldown brought coastal fog hinting at a milder weekend ahead.
