THE A96 was closed in both directions around four miles east of Huntly last night.

Emergency services were called at 4.40pm to what was described as a multi-vehicle collision on the crawler lanes towards Hillhead of Thomastown.

Six vehicles were involved but Police Scotland reported only one man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Long queues of traffic formed very quickly in both directions following the incident.

Drivers turned round on the carriageway to seek alternative routes, but local residents complained some were driving dangerously on the narrow side roads.

The A96 was re-opened just before 1am once the recovery of all the vehicles had been completed.
