Debate rages over childcare centre
FURIOUS parents have reacted in huge numbers to the news that a popular childcare centre could be set to close.
Parents are battling to save the Elgin Childcare Centre
More than 60 comments have already been added to The Northern Scot
website story 'Parents battle RAF over kids" since it was posted last Thursday.
Earlier last week, parents at the Elgin Childcare Centre, located on the town's Myreside Circle, were shocked to receive hand-delivered letters informing them the nursery would be shutting in the summer.
The RAF owns and runs the nursery, and has plans to revamp it to become a community centre for service families.
Parents met with RAF Lossiemouth Station Commander Group Captain Andy Hine on Wednesday, and he has agreed to consider their opinions before giving them a final answer.
Most of the web comments have come from parents and other members of the public who want to see the centre remain open.
Vikki Lewis commented: "These are a group of very hurt, angry and worried parents who are putting their children FIRST."
Added Jo West: "I agree that if a community centre is what the wider community want, then provision should be made to deal with the request seperately, but certainly not at the expense of a nursery which is loved by a lot of parents and children."
Others have been less supportive, however.
One woman, who said she is from an RAF family and registered her name as HGS Girl, said she supported the planned changes.
"I want a community centre that my whole family can use," she commented.
