Moray Operatic Dramatic Society staging musical comedy Eurobeat at Forres Town Hall
Fans of ‘Eurovision’ and theatre are set to be united by music during a play being staged in a historic local venue this spring.
Though the Moray Operatic Dramatic Society (MODS) is staging its third production at Forres Town Hall - parody ‘Eurobeat: Pride of Europe’ will require interactive judgement from the audience for its success.
Spokeswoman Amy Lowe claimed Eurobeat is the group’s most ambitious project yet.
She explained: “The attendees will be asked to vote for their favourite act. Neither the audience or the cast will know who the winner is until the announcement is made in act two.
“There will be something for everyone; whether you like pop, electronica or rock, you’ll find a song you want to vote for. A lot of them further parody their genre so there’s been lots of laughter in rehearsals!”
Established in 2023, a production team of 30 members of all ages from all over the region will be performing in Forres, including eight Forresians.
Performing at venues all over the area, MODS first production at Forres Town hall was a collection of musical numbers celebrating award-winning songs.
A more recent production here was another original musical - ‘Jukebox Journey’ - with popular songs from the 1950s to the 2000s.
“As a relatively new theatre group, they had a modest attendance,” said Amy, “but we hope to continue growing with Eurobeat!
“It will delight Eurovision fans and the spontaneity of the second act will provide an unforgettable audience experience!”
The musical was written by Craig Christie, who has previously written productions for London’s west end. Eurobeat won ‘Best New Musical’ at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2007.
Weekly rehearsals are currently taking place at Roseisle Village Hall, becoming more regular as the show draws nearer.
“The glamorous host Marlena will be played by the fabulous Karen Walters,” finished Amy. “Please come along, take part, and experience a night of musical joy.”
Eurobeat will be performed at Forres Town Hall on Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12 at 7.30pm, with an additional matinee performance at 2pm on the 12th.
