Elgin pub closes doors as precaution after staff fall ill

AN ELGIN pub has closed for a deep-clean as a precaution after two staff members fell ill.

John Hamilton, owner of the Caberfeidh Bar in Main Street, New Elgin, said yesterday that neither of the two employees were reporting Covid-19 symptoms but, in the interests of safety, he had taken the decision to close the pub for at least 72 hours.

Mr Hamilton said: "Unfortunately, we have chosen to close down for a minimum of 72 hours to enable us to deep-clean the pub.

"We have chosen to do this due to two members of our team becoming unwell within a 24-hour period. None of their symptoms is Covid-related. However, we will continue to monitor this.

"Although we don't have to close, we have chosen to do this for everyone's safety as that is always our top priority."

The bar has been carrying out daily temperature checks on both staff and customers.

Mr Hamilton added: "We took the decision to close after a member of our bar staff and a kitchen staff member came down with a vomiting bug on Saturday evening.

"The last thing we wanted was any of our customers coming down with a bug – especially as many of them are elderly."

The pub, which has plans to set up a permanent beer garden, reopened on July 7 following the coronavirus lockdown.
