Moray and Aberdeenshire police highlight security tips caravan owners following thefts

A spate of thefts involving caravans has sparked a police plea to owners to take extra care to avoid becoming a victim.

Officers in Moray and Aberdeenshire issued the warning following a number of thefts in the north-east.

While the force investigates, its North East Crime Reduction Team has issued a number of tips and advice to try to prevent others from being targeted.

A spokesperson said: “If you are storing your caravan over the winter, consider the security at your chosen storage location.

“Look for good physical security such as fencing, secure gates, lighting and CCTV. Always make use of a good quality hitch lock and wheel clamp and consider installing a tracker.

“One of Police Scotland’s approved caravan and motorhome registration and identification schemes are not only an effective deterrent, but can greatly assist with recovery.

“Fitting a combination of several good quality security products will deter most thieves.

“Ground anchors and driveway bollards with a high attack rating are other options to be considered.

“Never leave the spare keys for the caravan or any security locks inside.”
