Moray Council brown bin permits now on sale
Moray Council is now taking orders for brown bin permits after a further price rise.
Residents in Moray have been encouraged to buy their garden waste permits by March 7, to ensure it arrives before the first bin collection.
The permit, which now cost £52 after councillors backed a £2 price rise last week, must be displayed on brown bins containing garden waste.
Each additional garden waste bin requires a separate permit, however bins only containing only food waste do not need a permit.
A council spokesperson confirmed that permits ordered by March 7 would guarantee delivery of the permit by April 1 - when the new stickers come into effect.
Permits will be sent out in batches from week beginning March 24.
The spokesperson added that, while permits can be ordered online at any time of year, they are only valid from April 1, 2025, until March 31, 2026 and are not transferable between properties.
“I’d encourage anyone who is ordering a garden waste permit this year to make sure to do so before 7 March so your permit will be ready to start using from 1 April,” said Councillor Marc Macrae (Fochabers Lhanbryde, Conservative), Chairperson of the Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee.
“The slight increase in cost this year is an effort to recover more of the amount it takes to provide the service.
“As the collection of garden waste is not a core service that councils have to provide we have to balance the decision of providing it, or not, with the cost to do so increasing.
“A number of authorities don’t provide a collection service for garden waste and others are either stopping their collections to save on costs or also increasing their charges this year.
“We’re able to continue to offer the service and we hope residents see the value and benefit of having a permit.”
The Moray Council spokesperson confirmed that residents who do not buy permits can take garden waste to one of the council’s dumps for free.
They added: “Alternatively, people can compost garden waste at home.”
