A96 to close tonight as Police Scotland reconstruct accident east of Elgin where Lhanbryde man died after being hit by an ambulance
The A96 closed near Elgin as police staged a reconstruction at the scene of an accident that claimed the life of a 40-year-old man.
It follows a tragedy in the early hours of February 22 this year, where an ambulance, responding to an emergency call, was involved in a collision with a pedestrian.
The accident happened at around 3.30am on the A96 at Barmuckity, east of Elgin.
The man was taken to hospital where he died a short time later.
He was named last month by police as Gary Dewar from Lhanbryde.
Police say the road will be closed for an hour from 11 pm this evening with motorists advised to divert through Lossiemouth.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “The A96 between Reiket Lane and Coxton Park, Elgin, will be closed from 11pm on Wednesday, 9 April, 2025 to allow for a reconstruction to be carried out.
“There will be no formal diversion in place, however vehicles are advised to use the B9103 to Lossiemouth during the period of closure.
“The road will be closed for approximately one hour. Thank you for your patience.”
Sergeant Dave Cooper, of the North East Road policing unit, said last month: “Our thoughts remain with Gary’s family and friends at this difficult time. They have asked that their privacy is respected.
“Our enquiries into the circumstances of the crash continue and I would urge anyone that was driving on the A96 near Elgin around the time of the incident, to get in touch.
“I would appeal again to anyone who may have dash-cam footage to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 0494 of the February 22, 2025.”
