AS WELL as providing excitement for festival-lovers and a boost for the economy, having a big music event like MacMoray in town provides opportunities for students.

Those who attend UHI Moray’s Elgin campus were given the chance to work closely with MacMoray Festival organisers to ensure the smooth running of the weekend-long festival.

Volunteers of all ages made their way to Cooper Park to help in a variety of areas, from ticketing to working in the VIP areas and backstage with the artists.

It was part of a successful partnership between the festival and campus.

Amanda Leil, who studies childcare, said: “I have really enjoyed my weekend. It’s been really interesting to see backstage and the goings-ons of the festival. It’s an experience we might never get again so it’s worth a lot.

“I worked at Friendly Fest last year in Keith and this has given me a chance to see another festival on a bigger scale.

“We cleared up the site (on Sunday morning), worked on the VIP entrance making sure people had tickets and scanning tickets.”

The weekend also provided a chance for Jack Whyte, UHI Active Campus co-ordinator, to help promote health living and staying fit.

He said: “We were looking to promote courses and promote our new Active Campus programme.

“The Active Campus programme is being run by Sports Scotland across multiple campuses in Scotland.

“The plan is to get as many people active and physically on-the-go and involved in as many different activities.

“It’s been a good opportunity to promote not only the academic side of things but also Active Campus.”

Those involved with the weekend enjoyed themselves, and the hope is they can experience something similar in the near future.

Jack added: “The students have really, really enjoyed it. They enjoyed the excitement and buzz of doing something different and working backstage.

“To meet some of the starts backstage will be quite exciting for them. Getting that real world experience is really important.

“It would be amazing to have more opportunities like this for students. It’s great to see students out in the community and getting to know different groups and people in different industries.”
